Doug Schoon is an internationally known scientist, educator and author with over thirty years experience in the beauty and personal care industry. He is a leading industry authority, known for his work as Co-Chair of Nail Manufacturers Council (NMC) and the R&D Scientist that led Creative Nail Design's (CND) extremely successful and highly innovative Research and Development laboratory for almost 20 years. He also headed CND's Quality Assurance and Field Testing/Evaluation departments.
Schoon has worked tirelessly on scientific, technical and regulatory issues that have shaped the beauty industry. A strong advocate for salon safety, he represents the beauty industry on scientific matters in the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. He serves as an expert witness in legal cases, and doctors, dermatologists and podiatrists often consult Schoon when writing articles, books or scientific papers.
Schoon has authored several books, video and audio training programs, as well as dozens of magazine articles about salon products and safety, cleaning/disinfection and best practices for salon professionals. Schoon is well known to beauty professionals around the world for his captivating presentation style and his unique ability to make complex chemical theories and concepts seem simple and easy to understand.
In 1986, Schoon founded Chemical Awareness Training Service (CATS) – the beauty industry's very first safety training company. This was followed by his book, "Nail Structure & Product Chemistry", Second Edition, essential reading for nail salon professionals. Schoon is also a chief contributor to Milady's "Standard Nail Technology" and "Standard Cosmetology", as well as medical reference books such as Baran and Maibach's,"Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology."
In June of 2007, Schoon started a consulting firm, Schoon Scientific + Regulatory Consulting, LLC, focused on helping companies with scientific, regulatory and technical questions, challenges and opportunities.
Schoon has worked as a scientific researcher, author and lecturer for almost 35 years and holds a Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of California-Irvine. He currently resides in Dana Point, California.
